The Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research (established 50 years ago, in 1948, as the Institute of Folk Arts) is a research oriented institution in which scholars trained in various disciplines, such as ethnology, cultural anthropology, literary theory, linguistics, musicology, choreology, and art history aim for interdisciplinary cooperation. Their fields of research include contemporary and historical cultural phenomena and processes, oral literature, folk music and dance, folk theater, and folk visual arts. As early as in the 1960s the Institute produced a number of multidisciplinary monographs based on fieldwork in particular localities in Croatia. From the 1970s on, one can follow the broadening of the scope of interest in the recent cultural change in urban settings, as well as in the critical analysis of ethnographic practice and conventions.
The Institute's library contains some 17,000 books; it subscribes to about 300 periodicals. The documentation holdings consist of a rich manuscript collection, a collection of drawings, a collection of dance descriptions, and archives of sound recordings, photographs and video recordings. Since 1995, one of the two yearly volumes of the Institute's journal Narodna umjetnost. Croatian Journal of Ethnology and Folklore Research has been published in English. The associates of the Institute have also been contributing to various domestic and international journals and other editions. They have published over 120 books. Special efforts have been directed towards the participation of the Institute's scholars in undergraduate and graduate education and work with foreign students and visiting scholars.
